Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a very common ailments associated with bowel function (intestines) and affects an estimated 15% of persons, 3 times more women then men.

The cause are not clearly defines because it is manifold hence the several names for IBS, including spastic colon, spastic colitis, and mucous colitis, attest to the difficulty of getting a descriptive handle on the ailment. Moreover, each of the other names is itself as problematic as the term IBS.

The common symptom is constipation with bouts of diarrhoea. Further more it is accompanied by abdominal pain which resolve at stool evacuation. It is a functional disturbance without an organic causative factor identified. It is suspected that an allergic reaction to certain food components as well as stress and reactive depressive response may cause a disturbasnce in bowel motility. Therefore IBS is reserved to bowel motility disturbance where no causative factor can be identified.
